China has finished a large-scale modernization of CKD9 diesel locomotives for Turkmenistan at the CRRC Ziyang plant, and the units will soon return home for active operation. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The locomotives arrived at CRRC Ziyang in May 2025 for an extensive overhaul. Engineers repaired critical components, including bogies, diesel engines, and electrical systems. They also introduced advanced smart control platforms, safety monitoring technologies, and ergonomic improvements to boost performance and comfort.

China Expands Cooperation with Turkmen Railways

CRRC Ziyang went beyond technical work and organized training for Turkmen specialists. It also issued standardized maintenance manuals, helping the national operator develop an efficient service system. These efforts aim to ensure reliability and support smooth daily operations in Turkmenistan.

This upgrade program follows a service contract signed in late 2024 between CRRC Ziyang and Turkmenistan’s state railway company Türkmen Demirýollary. The deal marked the first time Turkmen locomotives were returned to China for complete overhauls, signaling a new stage of bilateral cooperation.

China Enhances CKD9 Series for Regional Rail Needs

The CKD9 series includes both passenger (CKD9A) and freight (CKD9C) diesel locomotives, designed for the 1,520 mm gauge widely used in post-Soviet states. These locomotives operate in Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Mongolia, strengthening regional railway networks.

Industry analysts emphasize that upgrading existing assets offers Turkmenistan a cost-effective alternative to buying new units. It also reinforces China’s role as a strategic technology partner for Central Asia’s transport infrastructure.

With modernization complete, the refurbished locomotives will soon be deployed back in Turkmenistan. The project highlights how advanced engineering and cross-border partnerships extend the lifecycle of rail assets while improving operational efficiency.
