Chiltern Railways Focuses on Sustainable Transport

Since July 2023, Chiltern Railways has used HVO in its Class 68 locomotives. This early adoption allowed the company to test the fuel’s performance before scaling up its usage.

According to the operator, HVO reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% across the entire fuel lifecycle — from production to combustion.

The shift toward alternative fuels positions Chiltern Railways as a leader in sustainable rail transport. While diesel still dominates the regional infrastructure, the company is steadily moving toward climate-responsible operations.

Expansion Potential and Environmental Impact

Chiltern Railways operates a 336 km rail network and manages a fleet that includes 64 diesel multiple units, 25 locomotive-hauled coaches, and 8 locomotives. Adding HVO-powered trains will lower reliance on fossil fuels and reduce the carbon footprint on key intercity routes.

The company aims to make green mobility the norm, not the exception. Although full electrification remains a challenge, switching to HVO is a meaningful step forward.

These investments reflect a broader industry shift toward balancing performance with environmental responsibility. By committing to long-term solutions, Chiltern Railways is helping reshape the future of British rail.
