EIB Provides €300 Million Grant to Czech Railway Operator for Modernization Efforts

The European Investment Bank is providing €300 million to the Czech railway operator for modernization and green transport improvements. This funding aims to enhance rail safety and operational efficiency across the country. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The financing covers the purchase of 180 new passenger cars and 20 electric locomotives, strengthening the Czech railway fleet. Additionally, 219 units will be upgraded with the advanced European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

This initiative supports the EU’s environmental goals by reducing emissions and increasing transport sustainability. EIB Vice President Kyriakos Kakouris emphasized that the updated fleet will boost safety and operational effectiveness.
The partnership between EIB and České dráhy is growing, underscoring the bank’s commitment to critical infrastructure projects. In 2023 alone, around €880 million was allocated for Czech railway projects.
České dráhy plans to use the funds primarily for ComfortJet trains intended for international routes. This will improve connections from Prague to major European cities, including Berlin, Vienna, and Bratislava.
České dráhy representative Lukáš Svoboda noted that the new loan will significantly enhance passenger comfort and safety. Upgraded long-distance trains will make journeys more comfortable and reliable for all travelers.
Czech regions will benefit greatly from railway modernization, supporting local economies and creating jobs. The project is expected to generate 160 new jobs for train drivers and maintenance personnel.
The financing is provided under the Connecting Europe Facility program, promoting growth and economic competitiveness within Europe.
