The planned route will run through Pallavaram, Chrompet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, and Vandalur, strengthening connectivity. This project integrates metro rail with an elevated road for better urban transportation.
Previously, Tamil Nadu’s government requested revisions to the original detailed project report (DPR). The updated plan now includes a two-level structure for metro and road expansion.
The newly proposed metro corridor will operate at Level 2, while the road remains at Level 1. This design ensures efficient transit flow and minimizes congestion along major routes.
Authorities anticipate significant benefits, as the corridor will link essential transport hubs. The metro will seamlessly connect the Kilambakkam Bus Terminal, Chennai Airport, and Tambaram Railway Station.
How Chennai Metro Expansion Benefits Commuters?
According to the DPR, the corridor will span 15.46 kilometers with thirteen elevated stations. The total estimated project cost, including the elevated road, reaches ₹9,335 crores.
Officials emphasize that this expansion will improve transit options for thousands of daily commuters. The project reflects the state’s commitment to advancing public transportation infrastructure.
Commuters will experience reduced travel times and enhanced metro accessibility across key suburban locations. Authorities believe this development aligns with the city’s rapid urbanization plans.
The government remains focused on optimizing urban transit solutions and improving last-mile connectivity. Public transport networks in Chennai continue evolving to accommodate increasing commuter demand.
With strategic planning, the metro extension aims to alleviate road congestion and enhance regional mobility. Experts anticipate a positive impact on urban transportation and daily commuting experiences.
This initiative underscores the city’s long-term commitment to sustainable and efficient transportation networks. The metro expansion is part of broader efforts to modernize Chennai’s transit system.
Authorities plan to ensure seamless project execution while minimizing disruption to existing transport services. The integration of metro and elevated roads supports the city’s infrastructure growth objectives.
Future developments in metro expansion will further contribute to Chennai’s growing demand for efficient travel. The government continues prioritizing investments in public transport infrastructure for urban development.
