Extensive dredging reinforced the 52-foot depth at the terminal. These improvements ensure reliable access for global shipping lines and sustain high-volume cargo flow through Charleston Port.

Charleston Port Project Backed by Federal and State Funding

SC Ports’ engineering division led the 14-month project, coordinating efforts between contractors and engineers. WSP USA handled design, while Mead and Hunt managed construction. Russell Marine LLC and Marinex Construction Inc. executed installation and dredging.

The U.S. Department of Transportation granted $11.2 million through its Port Infrastructure Development Program in 2019. This funding covered nearly half the $23 million cost, easing the financial load for local stakeholders.

Charleston Port continues to serve as a strategic trade hub on the East Coast. The enhancements position it to manage future demand and evolving vessel requirements, offering reliability and competitive access for shippers worldwide.
