CER Cargo Group has announced a deal to acquire Austrian rail freight operator WLC, using the transaction to extend its operations in Austria and Germany within its wider European network.

How CER Cargo Group is strengthening its regional presence?
Based in Hungary, CER Cargo Group won an open tender announced in May 2025 and gained the right to acquire Austrian rail freight operator WLC from its previous owner.

According to the current timetable, the transfer of ownership is expected to be completed by the end of 2025; however, the companies have not disclosed the financial terms of the deal.
WLC generates around 75% of its turnover from multimodal transport services, a model that, in practice, combines different modes of freight movement along the same route.
CER Cargo Group and the structure of WLC’s business
The remaining 25% of WLC’s business comes from single-wagon shipments, covering cargo such as cars, petroleum products, chemical materials, grain consignments and coal.
CER Cargo Group already operates rail freight services across Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, and the acquisition of WLC is described by the company as an important step in its development.
By bringing WLC under its control, CER Cargo Group aims to consolidate its activities in Austria and Germany, where the Austrian operator is already active on freight routes.
