The route crosses Callaghan Square, requiring extensive redevelopment of the local road network. Additionally, the project prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist safety with segregated bike lanes linked to the city’s transport system.

Future Plans and Impact of Cardiff Crossrail

GRAHAM plans to complete detailed designs in partnership with Cardiff City Council and Transport for Wales by autumn 2025. Construction is expected to finish in early 2028, with passenger operations beginning the same year.

The second phase aims to extend the line to Pierhead Street station, but funding remains unconfirmed. This extension would further enhance Cardiff’s railway network, linking key areas to Parkway Station near Newport.

The Cardiff Crossrail initiative represents a major step toward improving mobility and supporting Cardiff’s sustainable urban growth.
