04.07.2025
CapMetro celebrates 40 years of serving Central Texas with accessible transit, and local and state officials have proclaimed July 1 as “CapMetro Day” to mark the milestone. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Founded in 1985, CapMetro began with just a few bus routes and now supports over 70,000 weekday rides through a regional system of buses, rail, vanpools, and microtransit.

CapMetro Looks Back at 40 Years of Transit Growth
Voters in Austin approved the creation of CapMetro in January 1985. Service started later that year with local, express, and paratransit routes.
In its first decade, the agency introduced the UT Shuttle, added 100 buses, launched a vanpool program, and achieved full wheelchair accessibility across the fleet.
Since then, CapMetro has expanded with commuter rail between Leander and Downtown Austin, the first bus rapid transit lines in the region, and on-demand Pickup services in neighborhoods.
CapMetro Advances Future Plans with Project Connect and 2035 Vision
CapMetro is building the future of public transportation with Project Connect and Transit Plan 2035. These plans include light rail, expanded bus rapid transit, and improved commuter rail.
So far, the agency has added a rail station at Q2 Stadium, upgraded Red Line infrastructure, and launched Rapid Routes 800 and 837 to better serve East Austin.
Transit Plan 2035 offers a roadmap for modernizing the region’s mobility network over the next decade. Community proposals will be shared this fall, with board approval set for late 2025.
President and CEO Dottie Watkins said this milestone reflects a deeper promise: CapMetro will continue delivering smarter, greener, and more inclusive transit for all of Central Texas.
