CAF launches the first automated metro train in London
07.10.2025
CAF inaugurated London’s first-ever automatic metro train, affirming its dominance of smart transport technologies and green urban mobility solutions.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

CAF propels innovation for London’s city transport
The five-carriage Inneo train runs on a 38 km long Docklands Light Railway (DLR) line. It accommodates a total of 793 passengers, achieves a speed of 80 km/h, and accommodates turns of a radius of 38 meters.
Launch of the project was pushed by some 18 months by technical difficulties on both signaling systems and rolling stock. However, having been successful during testing, approval for service was given by Transport for London (TfL) for its high-grade automation and high-level safety standards.
The GoA3 operation runs the train by itself without active driver intervention, but an operator is still on hand for emergencies. CAF, in the future, intends to raise operation to GoA4, which will allow for driverless operation.
It invests in passenger comfort and technology
The €400m contract was signed during 2019 and subsequently increased to cover a total of 11 further trains. Overall, a total of 54 trains will be delivered to London by end of 2026, refleeting the entire DLR stock and increasing line capacity.
Modern air-conditioning, energy-efficient lighting, and special sections for disabled passengers are included in each train set. Three disabled areas and three universal areas for pushchairs, bikes, or baggage are also available. As a result, new train sets guarantee higher comfort, accessibility, and universal acceptability.
Experts point out that the CAF project enhances London’s standing among world capitals pursuing automation and clean public transport technologies. It also helps serve the city’s ambitions of lowering emissions and generic urban quality of life.
