CAF: Contract for the Supply of Modern Metro Trains for Madrid
19.06.2024
The Spanish company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) and the Madrid Metro have signed a contract for the supply of 40 modern six-car trains worth €400 million, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This contract, financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB), will not only strengthen the rolling stock of the Madrid Metro but also represent an important step toward enhancing its energy efficiency and implementing new technologies.
Technological Innovations
According to the contract terms, the new trains will be equipped with advanced technologies that allow them to operate at both GoA2 level automation and fully driverless GoA4 mode.
TransANT: a new generation of innovative freight wagons
This means the trains will be able to run both under driver control and completely autonomously, significantly increasing the flexibility and efficiency of traffic management.
Lifecycle Optimization
An important component of the contract is the development and implementation of a product lifecycle optimization program.
This involves systematic management of all stages of train operation, from production and commissioning to disposal, aiming to minimize costs and extend the service life of the trains.
Such a program will allow the Madrid Metro to significantly reduce operating costs and improve the quality of passenger service.
Sustainable Development and Energy Saving
The new trains will be significantly more energy-efficient compared to the existing fleet of the Madrid Metro, which includes over 600 trains of various series (2000, 3000, 5000, 6000, 8000, and 8400).
The use of energy-saving technologies and materials will not only reduce electricity costs but also contribute to improving the environmental situation in the city, which is particularly important in the context of a modern metropolis.
History of Cooperation
The cooperation between CAF and the Madrid Metro has a long history.
In 2010-2011, CAF already supplied series 8400 trains for Madrid, which have been successfully operating on Line 6. This experience laid the foundation for further development of the partnership and the signing of the new contract.
International Context
CAF is actively expanding its presence in international markets. This spring, the company signed a contract for the supply of new metro trains for Oslo.
The agreement includes a firm order for 20 trains worth €150 million and an option for the supply of another 90 trains.
This indicates the high competitiveness of CAF’s products and the trust of international partners.
The contract for the supply of 40 new trains for the Madrid Metro is an important step in the development of the city’s transport infrastructure.
Modern technologies, energy efficiency, and lifecycle optimization programs will make the Madrid Metro even more convenient and reliable for millions of passengers.
The partnership with CAF, whose successful experience has been proven over years of operation, ensures the high quality and reliability of the supplied trains, which plays a key role in the sustainable development of urban transport.
