BMF Port Burgas, the private operator of both terminals, is leading the construction under the “Connections from East to West” initiative. The project began in August 2024 and is scheduled for completion by May 2027.

A total of $9.9 million—85% of the funding—is secured through EU support under the Connecting Europe Facility. The remaining costs will be covered by BMF Port Burgas using its own resources and possible bank loans.

Modernizing Infrastructure at Burgas Port Terminals

The upgrade includes new rail infrastructure at terminals Burgas East-2 and Burgas West to improve logistics. A 456-meter track will directly connect both terminals, enhancing internal coordination and reducing delays.

At Burgas West, a new marshalling yard will be built with six rail tracks ranging from 565 to 822 meters. These tracks will total nearly 4 km and enable the terminal to handle up to 102 wagons daily.

This yard will separate rail traffic from other port operations. As a result, safety and efficiency will improve significantly, while overall capacity increases to support growing freight demand.

Burgas Port to Become Key Logistics Hub

Terminal Burgas East-2 will gain two new tracks measuring 614 and 412 meters, along with a scissors crossover. These additions will allow up to 166 wagons to be processed daily across berths 16 to 19.

Deputy Minister Angel Zaburtov emphasized the strong public-private partnership behind the project. He stated that this collaboration would enhance Burgas Port’s strategic position on the East–West trade corridor.

By shifting more freight to rail, the upgrade aligns with the EU Green Deal. It helps reduce road congestion and emissions, supporting a more sustainable logistics model across Southeast Europe.

Once completed, the new railway infrastructure will position the port as a vital link between the Baltic, Black, and Aegean Seas. The Burgas Port upgrade reinforces Bulgaria’s ambition to become a logistics bridge across continents.
