British railway factories at risk of closure
19.09.2023
As jobs in manufacturing face uncertainty and railway factories are threatened with closure, the UK government has called for immediate decisions on building and upgrading rolling stock, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply citing railfreight.
The conductor in this effort is the Rail Industry Association (RIA).
It’s reported that the government is urgently collaborating with train manufacturer Alstom to secure jobs for its workforce and suppliers at its Derby plant, the largest train manufacturing facility in the UK.

Recent stop-start decisions on rolling stock orders have raised concerns in the train manufacturing and repair sectors about the future.
Over the past three and a half years, the only significant order for new or upgraded trains was the HS2 contract announced in December 2021.
Pre-existing orders will soon be fulfilled, and factories and modernization facilities are at risk, putting thousands of jobs in jeopardy.
The industry is calling for urgent decisions on modernizing or replacing parts of the UK’s passenger fleet, some of which are nearing 35 years of age.

The UK government has responded to calls for a coordinated rolling stock replacement and reconstruction plan.
“The rail manufacturing sector plays a vital role in the growth of the UK economy,” says the statement from the Ministry of Transport. “The government continues to support the entire sector.”
