Brazil to Acquire 33 New Metro Trains: Rolling Stock Renewal and Infrastructure Modernization
30.08.2024
The authorities of the Federal District of Brasília (the capital of Brazil) have announced plans for a significant expansion of the city’s metro fleet, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

It has been reported that the government plans to purchase 33 new trains, which is 18 more than the initially announced number.

This initiative aims to update the aging rolling stock and reduce train intervals to improve transportation accessibility.
Currently, Brasília’s metro system uses 20 Serie 1000 trains, which were manufactured in the late 1990s at the Alstom Mafersa plant in São Paulo.
These trains have long needed replacement to meet modern standards of comfort and safety.
In addition to these, the line also operates 12 Alstom Metropolis trains, produced in the 2010s. However, their number is becoming insufficient for the city’s growing needs.
To finance the first phase of the procurement, which involves the acquisition of 15 trains, the district government plans to attract funds from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development of Brazil (BNDES).
It is expected that the tender for the supply of trains will be announced next year, with the first trains arriving in Brasília by 2027.
A key component of this renewal will also be the introduction of a new signaling system, which will optimize traffic management and enhance passenger safety.
According to preliminary estimates, the total cost of the project will amount to 1.3 billion reais, of which 900 million reais ($180 million) will be allocated for the purchase of rolling stock, and the remaining 400 million reais ($80 million) for the installation of new signaling systems.
Thus, the Brasília authorities are taking a serious step toward modernizing urban transport, which should significantly improve passenger service quality and reduce the load on the existing infrastructure.
This project will not only solve current transportation issues but also create conditions for the further development of the metro in the future.
