BNSF Railway Advances Positive Train Control Across Former MRL Line
28.10.2025
The implementation of the Positive Train Control system by the BNSF Railway Company in the former Montana Rail Link system is being finalized. This marks the culmination of the largest freight rail modernization project undertaken in Montana.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

BNSF Railway strengthens rail safety with Positive Train Control
The company regained ownership of the line on January 1, 2024, as the long-term lease by Montana Rail Link had expired. Prior to the transfer of ownership of the line, the latter had already implemented PTC in 2018 and had been among the first regional railroads in the US to do so voluntarily.

The design of Positive Train Control aims at preventing train-to-train collisions, overspeed derailments, and unauthorized movement of trains automatically. The system uses GPS, wireless communication, and central monitoring. As the integration of these technologies reaches maturity, BNSF Railway further enhances the standard of safety and efficiency of the rail network.
BNSF Railway transition affects locomotives and operations
The modernization process has also seen a positive change along the line. As part of the change, the old Northern Pacific searchlight signals have been upgraded by new equipment that supports PTC. The blue Locos of Montana Rail Link continue to work with BNSF. However, the role of these Locos as leaders may depend on PTC adherence.
Spotters have noted that a few of these engines remain in service on BNSF freight trains throughout the system—to Montana, Denver, and Chicago—as implied by the usual power noted. Although these may change in service assignments from what they were, these engines remain in active service.
For BNSF, full PTC activation across the former MRL network marks another milestone in its broader commitment to safety, innovation, and modernization. The company states that Positive Train Control now operates across all required subdivisions within its national network.
