BNSF Honors 99 Shippers for Outstanding Hazmat Safety
11.11.2025
BNSF honored 99 shipper companies with its 2025 Product Stewardship Awards for excellence in the safe transport of hazardous materials. This move further reinforced BNSF’s industry-leading position among railroads with respect to safety.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

BNSF Enhances Leadership in Safety Through Partnership
The companies that received BNSF’s Product Stewardship award are 99 shippers who transported 500 full cars of hazardous materials successfully without one release during the 2024 cycle.

These companies were able to establish high levels of safety and display strong collaboration with the railroad’s specialized safety staff. Since such discipline promotes safe and efficient movement, this ensures rail transport is the most reliable form of land transport.
Since introducing the Product Stewardship Award in 1997, BNSF has encouraged shared accountability and continuous improvement throughout the supply chain. The award-winning shippers are also participants in the Responsible Care® program administered by the American Chemistry Council, which provides worldwide standards for environmental and safety performance.
“Safety is a shared responsibility,” said Chad Sundem, Vice President of Safety BNSF Railway. “We recognize that it takes partnerships to be safe,” he continued. “We feel that in our company, it is essential to honor those who share that commitment to safety,” added Sundem.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement Led by BNSF
In addition to such honors, BNSF encourages businesses to innovate more and go beyond mere compliance. As a result, today numerous shippers are investing in predictive maintenance projects, improving the integrity of tank cars, and implementing digital monitoring systems.
Since dangerous substances are the backbone of some critical sectors such as manufacturing and energy production, BNSF highlights safety as one of its key strengths. The company has set targets and has adopted technologies that enable monitoring to prevent leakages and ruptures.
BNSF further extends its internal safety initiatives such as specialized training for employees, first responders, and the use of smart sensors throughout its network.
The technology identifies anomalies before disruptions occur to ensure that the company’s 32,500-mile network is functioning securely and efficiently. The list of those who received the Product Stewardship Awards is posted on BNSF’s web site.
