BLW locomotives begin operation in Mozambique and strengthen India’s presence
07.10.2025
BLW locomotives have been induction-based in Mozambique, increasing India–Africa cooperation, for successful technology export and sound international funding are testified by the project itself.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

It is a new page in the history of Mozambique’s railways
Earlier, a ceremony of launching the first two BLW locomotives occurred at central railway station, Maputo. Transport Minister João Matlombe pointed out that coordination with India participates in infrastructure development and enhances freight operation efficiency.

It can transport up to 2,700 tons per locomotive, and fuel efficiency is a mere 4.5 liters per kilometer. Their technical specifications render the locomotives energy-efficient and cost-effective, and onboard diagnostics helps to keep mechanical constituents in real-time surveillance.
It signed a contract for ten locomotives during November 2023. It is being undertaken by RITES, Indian Railways’ export subsidiary, and Mozambique’s CFM administration of railways is the client. The production is being done at Varanasi’s BLW factory, and all deliveries are to reach their end by this year end.
The locomotives as an engine for global cooperation and investment
The contract is priced at $37.7 million, sponsored by the African Development Bank. India quoted the best price, which saw it emerge as a winner of the bid. The deliveries to BLW mark a growing African presence of India as a force of a strategic partner of Africa and its capability of competing against major world manufacturers.
Previously, in May, Mozambique took delivery of three locomotives from China’s CRRC, which went into service soon after. The delivery of BLW, however, marks a new milestone for diversification of suppliers and African-Asian co-operation at a deeper level. The Locos, when delivered, will enhance reliability of operation and decrease long-term maintenance expense.
For Mozambique, it’s a step towards upgrading a modern national railroad network and reinforcing regional logistics chains. For India, it’s a demonstration of industrial know-how, engineering prowess, and growing global confidence in its capacity for manufacturing.
