The shipment keeps the 10-locomotive export contract executed through RITES on track and reflects India’s expanding railway manufacturing footprint.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Varanasi is widely known for its spiritual and cultural identity, but the city is also gaining attention as a railway production and export center. BLW, a major Indian Railways manufacturing unit, has continued to build its presence in international markets by completing another dispatch under the Mozambique programme.

Mozambique order under the RITES export contract (10 locomotives)

For BLW, the Mozambique deal is a milestone export order. The agreement covers ten 3300 HP AC–AC diesel-electric locomotives built for Cape Gauge (1067 mm) operations, a standard commonly used across African rail networks.

Deliveries have been spaced over 2025: the first two locomotives were shipped in June, followed by the third in September and the fourth in October. The fifth unit left on 12 December 2025, and the sixth was dispatched on 15 December 2025. Each shipment advances the contract and shows continued execution in locomotive production.

3300 HP AC–AC diesel-electric locomotive: features and performance

The 3300 HP AC–AC diesel-electric locomotive is described as combining high output with a modern, crew-focused cab. The units are rated at 3300 HP, are built for Cape Gauge (1067 mm) networks, and are designed for speeds of up to 100 kmph.

The cab features listed in the source include a refrigerator, a hot plate, a mobile holder, and an ergonomically designed layout. The locomotives are intended for long-haul freight and mixed-traffic duties, including operation across varied climatic conditions.

Why Mozambique Railways (CFM) returned to BLW?

Mozambique Railways (CFM) awarded the new contract after being satisfied with earlier BLW deliveries. The operator had previously received six 3000 HP diesel locomotives and cited performance in African conditions, lower maintenance needs, and consistent reliability as reasons that supported a repeat order.

Located in Varanasi, BLW has developed from a domestic producer into a railway export hub. As part of Indian Railways, it relies on indigenous design capability, skilled manpower, and production infrastructure to meet international requirements. Since 2014, BLW has exported locomotives to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Mozambique (Railway Supply).

India’s railway exports also extend beyond locomotives. The original text notes exports of metro coaches, passenger coaches, bogies, and critical components to a broad list of destinations, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, and Italy in Europe; Mozambique, the Republic of Guinea, and South Africa in Africa; and Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Australia, Canada, and Mexico among other markets. This spread underscores India’s ability to supply equipment for different gauges, standards, and operating conditions.

The export momentum is linked in the source narrative to the Government of India initiatives Make in India and Make for the World. With the sixth unit now dispatched, BLW’s programme for Mozambique continues to position the plant as an international-facing locomotive production base and supports India’s standing as a supplier of advanced railway technology.
