BLET Secures New Benefits Agreement with Chicago Railway
16.04.2025
In late March, BLET members approved a new agreement with the Belt Railway Company of Chicago, introducing paid sick leave, 401(k) retirement access, and improved flexibility in personal time scheduling. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

BLET Gains Historic Sick Leave and Retirement Access
For the first time in company history, BLET engineers working at BRC will receive up to four paid sick days annually. This benefit helps workers better manage health needs without sacrificing income.

In addition, BRC will now offer its 401(k) retirement investment program to engineers. This inclusion allows long-term savings and aligns with standard benefits found in other U.S. industries.
BLET Enhances Flexibility with Personal Leave Days
The agreement also introduces a flexible holiday policy. Engineers can now replace President’s Day, Good Friday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve with five personal leave days.
This update offers better schedule control, especially for workers with different cultural, religious, or family obligations. The flexibility supports work-life balance and respects individual needs.
Union leaders called the agreement a major step forward in improving conditions for rail workers. They emphasized how paid sick leave and retirement access are long-overdue improvements.
BRC, a major freight hub in Chicago, employs a large number of engineers. As labor standards come under more scrutiny, this agreement sets an example other rail companies may soon follow.
By prioritizing employee well-being, the railway and the union have strengthened their collaboration and improved morale. This pact represents more than just policy updates—it reflects an industry shift.
