The unmanned rail platform Hiivr Rail, equipped with traction batteries for transporting maritime containers, has been introduced by the railway infrastructure operator Arc Infrastructure and the startup Parallel Systems in Western Australia, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Trials of the platform are scheduled on main rail lines in 2024 using Arc Infrastructure’s train control system.

Railroad transportation in the USA has reached its highest level in two years

Hiivr Rail aims at efficiently transporting containers from ports to multimodal terminals, allowing the use of smaller terminals, renewable energy for battery recharging, and reducing reliance on trucks in container transportation.

Similar trials are planned for 2024 in the United States on two small railroads: Georgia Central and Heart of Georgia.

The concept of unmanned rail platforms aligns well with the initiative to shift maritime container processing operations in Western Australia.
