Bengaluru Launches 271-Kilometre Rail Network to Ease Traffic
09.06.2025
Bengaluru has announced a circular railway project, spreading over 271 km and requiring 2,500 acres of land, which could help decongest traffic and provide better connectivity across the city. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The new network is intended to link to Bengaluru’s outlying regions with national highways and suburban trains for more seamless passage, for commuter and freight traffic. Officials say this project is one of the keys to taking pressure off the city’s overtaxed roads.

There will be three main stretches in the route Path: Nidavanda–Doddaballapura–Devanahalli–Malur and Malur–Anekal–Hejjala, Hejjala–Soluru–Nidavanda The estimated cost of land acquisition will be covered by the central government, demonstrating high policy support for urban transport.

Officials hope the system will change how people travel each day by tying together residential, industrial and commercial centers. This will decrease dependence on private vehicles and save commuter’s travel time running into thousands.
Moreover, there are environmental and sustainability goals the railway is meant to meet for the city. It promotes the use of public transport and reduces road congestion, which in turn helps reduce urban pollution.
Apart from the passengers, the circular rail system will assist in logistics flow by facilitating freight movement from economic centers to transport corridors. This will transfer heavy truck traffic and emissions off of the network.
Experts stress on need to have modern infrastructure to cater to Bengaluru’s expansion. Other new lines like Tumakuru–Rayadurga and Tumakuru–Davangere, as well as pedestrian subways, flyovers and underpasses, are a part of the project.
Planners say they are making a good faith effort to show their work while wrestling with issues like land acquisition and environmental approvals. They seek to engage communities and local actors in molding the process of implementation.
By investing in sustainable and long-term capacity, Bengaluru prepares itself for the future. The project is supposed to deliver better mobility, reduced traffic congestion and a more equitable subway system.
