In August 2023, BEML won a contract to supply 53 such trains, beating competitors like Alstom, CAF, and Titagarh. Each train will be made of high-quality austenitic stainless steel, ensuring durability and reliability. The trains will be capable of speeds up to 85 km/h, optimal for urban transit lines.

In addition, the trains will be equipped with a GoA4-level automated control system, allowing them to operate without a driver. The electric motors are supplied by the Japanese company Mitsubishi, ensuring high efficiency.

The total contract value, including train maintenance for 15 years, amounts to 31.7 billion rupees, equivalent to $378.5 million. The project is partially funded by a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The trains are expected to run on two new metro lines, which will be completed by the end of 2025 and mid-2026, respectively.

BEML has extensive experience in metro train deliveries, having previously supplied over 2,000 metro cars to various Indian cities. In some cases, the deliveries were made in consortium with Japan’s Mitsubishi and South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem.
