BEML driverless metro train: prototype for Bengaluru

BEML has unveiled a BEML driverless metro train for Bengaluru—a prototype of its six-car 5RS-DM trainset. The company showcased the unit at its plant in the city, as also reported by The Week.

Under current plans, five 5RS-DM trains are expected to enter service in May 2026, following the opening of the first section of the Bengaluru Metro Pink Line. By December, when the second section is due to launch, the route is slated to operate 23 trainsets. Peak-hour headways are stated at 4.5 minutes.

According to the manufacturer, each train—with inter-car gangways—can carry up to 2,000 passengers and reach speeds of up to 80 km/h. The car bodies are made of austenitic stainless steel, as noted in the company’s press release.
5RS-DM trainset and GoA4 driverless operation
The rolling stock is equipped with an automation system that enables GoA4 driverless operation. Additional context on GoA4 automation for Bengaluru Metro trains is outlined by Railway Supply. The trainset is also fitted with traction motors supplied by Japan’s Mitsubishi.
BEML contract to supply metro trains for Bengaluru
BEML secured the contract to supply 53 of these trains in August 2023, beating Alstom, CAF, and Titagarh. In March and December this year, an additional 13 trainsets were ordered.
The total procurement value is 39.9 billion rupees ($439.34 million), including 15 years of maintenance.
BEML metro deliveries in India
BEML has previously delivered more than 2,000 metro cars to various Indian cities. Deliveries were carried out in a consortium with Mitsubishi and South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem.
