Baker Hughes Introduced an Ultrasonic Wheel Inspection System
14.07.2025
Baker Hughes, through its Waygate Technologies division, introduced the fully automated Krautkrämer WheelStar RPS ultrasonic inspection system for railway wheels, which operates without human intervention. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
WheelStar RPS handles wheels of various shapes and wear levels. The system accounts for rim profile and monitors the contact area, delivering higher accuracy compared to manual inspection methods.

A drive mechanism rotates the wheel, while a robotic module scans it with ultrasonic sensors in just 6 minutes. The data is then automatically processed, deviations calibrated, and a report is generated.

Baker Hughes’ solution simplifies control and reporting
The developers implemented a one-window interface and integrated a database of wheel types. This streamlined system deployment and scaling across the railway sector.
In addition, the system generates reports automatically and reduces staff workload. Thanks to digitalization, the risk of errors decreases, and maintenance costs are optimized.
Baker Hughes advances digital inspection technology
The solution meets the demands of modern logistics operations. It is well-suited for large-scale infrastructure projects where speed, precision, and minimal downtime are essential.
With this innovation, Baker Hughes delivers a product that combines automation, accuracy, and user-friendliness — strengthening its position in the field of technical inspection.
