Argentina resumes production of locomotives
01.11.2021
Materfer has released the MTF3300 series passenger locomotive for the national carrier Trenes Argentinos. This is the first locomotive built in the country in the 21st century.
The new rolling stock is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 130 km/h. It is equipped with a 16-cylinder engine of the EMD 16-645-E3B series with a capacity of 4.9 MW, which was taken from the EMD SD40-2 locomotives delivered to Argentina by American GM.
This was reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply.
The Materfer plant was built by Italian Fiat in Córdoba in 1962.
The site specialized in the production of locomotives, electric and diesel trains, trams and passenger cars for the domestic market, but went bankrupt in 1998. After the change of owners in 2002, the plant resumed production of diesel trains.
Currently, the largest player in the Argentine rolling stock market is CRRC. Over the past 10 years, the company has supplied more than 100 locomotives to the country.
