Amtrak has announced expanded train cancellations in the Midwest today due to extreme weather. A total of 27 services are affected, with bus transportation provided on canceled routes.

Amtrak Midwest Train Cancellations and Alternate Arrangements

Extreme cold weather continues to disrupt Amtrak services, with eight additional Midwest trains canceled as of Monday, Jan. 20. This includes Missouri River Runner train No. 318, which was set to depart Kansas City at 8:40 a.m. Passengers will be accommodated on buses to Chicago, connecting with train No. 306, departing St. Louis at 5:40 p.m.

Missouri River Runner train No. 319, originally scheduled to leave Chicago at 9:40 a.m., will terminate at St. Louis. Bus services will replace the St. Louis-Kansas City portion. Lincoln Service trains No. 300, No. 301, and No. 305 are also canceled, with alternative schedules or buses provided to minimize passenger inconvenience.

Why Amtrak Prioritizes Passenger Safety During Severe Weather?

Amtrak has also canceled Saluki train No. 390, departing Carbondale, Ill., at 7:30 a.m., with buses arranged for affected passengers. Additional Hiawatha trains, including No. 330 and No. 332, are now canceled. These updates were announced at 5:20 p.m. ET, ensuring timely communication.

Cancellations extend to Borealis train No. 1340 from St. Paul to Chicago. Amtrak continues to adapt operations to prioritize passenger safety during extreme winter conditions.

Further Service Disruptions Through Wednesday, Jan. 22

Amtrak previously announced cancellations through Jan. 22, impacting major lines such as the Empire Builder, Sunset Limited, and Texas Eagle. Passengers should confirm travel plans regularly, as new adjustments may arise.

The Northeast Corridor has not been spared, with Acela train No. 2163, scheduled to depart Boston for Washington, canceled today. Passengers affected by these disruptions can find updates via Amtrak’s official website or alerts on X.com.
