Amtrak acknowledged the issue, explaining that safety inspections revealed discrepancies in maintenance records. Officials determined that certain Sound Transit rail cars required immediate removal from service to ensure passenger safety.
Due to these findings, Amtrak technicians are expediting necessary repairs, with normal operations expected to resume in the coming weeks. Commuters continue experiencing major inconveniences as they seek alternative routes.
Amtrak, Sound Transit, and WSDOT Offer Alternative Travel Options
Amtrak, Sound Transit, and WSDOT are collaborating to support affected commuters during these disruptions. Passengers are encouraged to use Amtrak Cascades trains for travel between Tukwila, Tacoma, Edmonds, and Everett.
Southbound Amtrak Cascades trains depart King Street Station today at 5:40 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. The northbound train departs at 6:00 p.m. Passengers must board inside the station, not on the Sounder platform.
Officials urge riders to arrive 15 minutes early and present their ORCA cards upon boarding. These alternative options aim to ease disruptions while Amtrak accelerates train inspections and necessary repairs.
“We apologize to our partner and impacted customers for today’s cancellations,” an Amtrak spokesperson stated. “We are conducting an internal investigation to determine the root cause and prevent future issues.”
Sound Transit passengers continue facing uncertainties, but officials remain committed to restoring full service soon. Amtrak, Sound Transit, and WSDOT are working diligently to ensure safe and efficient transit solutions.
