Amtrak Converts HHP8 Units into Operational Cab Cars

After years of storage, Amtrak has transformed its retired HHP8 locomotives into functioning cab control cars. The company began testing the refitted units in 2023, and recently conducted crew-familiarization runs.

On April 7 and 8, test trains operated between New York and Wilmington, Delaware, with cab cars Nos. 9750 and 9751. These cars bracketed an ACS-64-powered consist, simulating real-world push-pull operations.

Amtrak aims to replace or strengthen its aging Metroliner cab car fleet. Repurposing existing equipment allows the company to reduce costs while improving service reliability along high-demand routes.

Amtrak Pushes Forward with Sustainable Fleet Strategy

Amtrak originally introduced the fifteen HHP8 locomotives in 2001. Manufactured by Bombardier and Alstom, they were withdrawn from service by 2015 due to persistent technical failures.

Instead of scrapping the entire fleet, Amtrak launched a conversion project to retrofit the locomotives. These now serve a new function without the cost of purchasing new railcars.

The initiative reflects Amtrak’s broader strategy to increase efficiency and adapt to growing ridership. Modernized cab cars play a key role in streamlining operations without overextending the company’s budget.

By giving these “Hippos” a new purpose, the operator reinforces its commitment to sustainability and innovation. Further testing is scheduled this week as part of the final integration phase.
