Melanie van der Horst, Chair of the Amsterdam Transport Region, said the decision ensures more reliable and expanded transit for the city’s growing population and demand.

GVB’s New Role Supports Amsterdam’s Future Mobility

GVB’s extended role enables the city to boost service frequency and quality. By 2027, metro lines will run more often, supporting comfort and efficiency for the increasing number of passengers.

Transport planners also aim to convert busy routes into high-quality public transport (HOV) lines. These corridors will run at shorter intervals to serve peak demand across the Amsterdam region.

Amsterdam Moves Toward Sustainable Transport Goals

The contract outlines GVB’s responsibilities to reduce energy use, increase circular practices, and prepare the system for climate-related disruptions.

Claudia Zuiderwijk, GVB CEO, emphasized that the expanded network helps keep Amsterdam accessible and supports economic and environmental priorities.

Amsterdam’s public transport network includes five metro lines covering 42.7 km with 39 stations, along with a 200-km tram system and 500 stops.

GVB also manages a broad network of bus routes across the metropolitan area and ferry services on the IJ and North Sea Canal. These ferries remain free for passengers and play a key role in connecting Amsterdam-Noord to the city center.

This renewed partnership ensures Amsterdam continues building an inclusive, reliable, and green transport future for residents and visitors alike.
