Amrit Bharat Express trains were introduced in Kerala on Friday, with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi flagging off four new services designed to improve inter-state connectivity and regional travel across southern India, as outlined by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

The rollout included three Amrit Bharat Express routes and one new passenger service, presented as a way to strengthen Kerala rail connectivity and support both long-distance journeys and routine day-to-day movement within the state.

Prime Minister Shri Modi flagged off the Nagercoil–Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express, the Thiruvananthapuram–Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express, and the Thiruvananthapuram–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, along with the Thrissur–Guruvayur Passenger Train.

The ceremony was held in Thiruvananthapuram and brought together dignitaries including the Governor of Kerala, Shri Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Ministers Shri V. Somanna and Shri George Kurian, and the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, Shri V. V. Rajesh, as reported by The Indian Express.

In his address, the Prime Minister said the new services strengthen Kerala’s rail connectivity and are intended to make travel easier for long-distance passengers. He pointed to modern passenger amenities and improved safety standards as part of what the new trains are expected to offer.

He also linked the expansion of rail services to broader benefits for the state, citing tourism, trade, education, employment, and cultural exchange. With Kerala attracting millions of visitors annually, the improvements were framed as supporting mobility for both residents and travelers.

Thrissur–Guruvayur Passenger Train for pilgrims and commuters

The Thrissur–Guruvayur Passenger Train was a central part of the launch, presented as a practical service for pilgrims and daily commuters. Guruvayur—home to one of India’s most revered temples—sees heavy passenger movement throughout the year.

Prime Minister Shri Modi remarked that the passenger service would make journeys easier, more affordable, and more convenient for devotees traveling between Thrissur and Guruvayur, while also improving access to surrounding areas and key local hubs.

New routes and states benefitted

The new services were presented with their routes and the areas expected to benefit from the added connectivity:

Nagercoil–Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express

States benefitted: Tamil Nadu, Kerala & Karnataka. The service was described as offering affordable long-distance rail travel with state-of-the-art passenger amenities, supporting reliable, safe, and efficient inter-state connectivity, and promoting tourism and local economic growth.

Thiruvananthapuram–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express

States benefitted: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. It was described as strengthening multi-state rail connectivity, improving passenger comfort, and facilitating affordable long-distance travel, with additional service details published by South Central Railway.

Thiruvananthapuram–Tambaram Amrit Bharat Express

States benefitted: Kerala & Tamil Nadu. The service was described as improving inter-state travel efficiency, offering modern facilities and comfort, strengthening tourism and local economies, and supporting safe and time-bound journeys.

Thrissur–Guruvayur Passenger Train

District benefitted: Thrissur (Kerala). The service was described as improving access to religious and commercial hubs, making travel easier for pilgrims and commuters, and boosting tourism and local economic activity.

The inauguration also highlighted “Nari Shakti in action” through the operation of one of the inaugural Amrit Bharat Express services by an all-women crew, presented as a symbol of women’s growing role in India’s transport and infrastructure sectors.

In his closing remarks, Prime Minister Shri Modi said these rail projects would accelerate Kerala’s overall development and reiterated that a developed Kerala is essential to the vision of a developed India.

He affirmed that the Union Government stands firmly with the people of Kerala and expressed confidence that improved connectivity will continue to unite regions, cultures, and communities across southern India.
