The new route, titled the “Transcontinental Chief,” would carry passengers, cars, and tractor-trailers. AmeriStarRail envisions truckers boarding with their vehicles and using Amtrak coaches, sleepers, and dining cars during federally mandated rest periods.

This service would also connect Harrisburg, PA, with Washington, D.C., offering broader regional access. AmeriStarRail plans to use Amtrak equipment, including locomotives and passenger cars, as well as TTX flatcars and auto carriers.

The company proposes to replace Amtrak’s existing Southwest Chief and Pennsylvanian routes. Because much of the route uses double-track lines, operations could begin by May 10, 2026.

According to AmeriStarRail, its proprietary train handling techniques will help avoid past service delays. The company aims to finalize designs for bilevel trainsets by October 1, 2025.

AmeriStarRail Highlights Public-Private Innovation

AmeriStarRail’s Chief Operating Officer, Scott Spencer, suggested this project could launch a new era in American rail travel. He believes it offers Amtrak a chance to improve long-distance service economics through private investment.

The train would also provide a unique solution for commercial freight movement, merging passenger comfort with efficient logistics.

AmeriStarRail Targets 2026 Launch with Amtrak Support

Spencer invited Amtrak to partner in creating a privately funded plan. He believes the service can begin in time for America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, offering a patriotic and profitable milestone.

Although Europe features truck transport trains, they cater only to freight. This proposed service would break ground by serving both truckers and passengers on one train.
