Alstom Implements Diesel Trains for Stable Transport

In 2025, 16 leased diesel trains from the Lint 41 series will run on route RB15 between Bad Homburg and Brandoberndorf. These trains will replace Coradia iLint hydrogen-powered trains, which proved unreliable over two years of operation. Alstom will bear all costs of the diesel train leases, with the contract running until the end of 2025.

This decision aims to stabilize passenger schedules and improve overall service quality. RMV expects the transition to significantly reduce delays and disruptions. Additionally, four diesel trains already in operation on route RB16 will remain in service to support the corridor.

Alstom Enhances Hydrogen Technology Despite Current Challenges

Hydrogen-powered trains will continue to operate on route RB12 between Königstein im Taunus and Frankfurt am Main. Alstom is increasing spare parts production and strengthening its repair facilities to ensure sufficient operational trains. By the end of 2025, Alstom plans to upgrade critical components of the Coradia iLint trains to enhance their long-term reliability.

Although diesel trains are a temporary solution, RMV reaffirms its commitment to hydrogen technology as a strategic priority. Alstom is addressing technical shortcomings revealed during the operation of hydrogen trains in the challenging Taunus terrain.

A Temporary Shift Towards Reliable Transport

The temporary use of diesel trains ensures dependable passenger services while maintaining the focus on innovative hydrogen technologies. Alstom continues refining hydrogen-powered trains to make them more efficient and reliable for future use.

This measure will stabilize passenger schedules, maintaining trust in the transport system. At the same time, Alstom is preparing the technical foundation for reintroducing hydrogen-powered trains, which remain vital for the Taunus region’s sustainable transport future.
