Alstom has shifted its strategy and is moving production of Coradia Stream trains for Romanian operator ARF from Chorzów, Poland, to Bautzen, Germany.

Cyber Resilience Takes Center Stage at Rail Industry Conference in London

The company expects to complete the first train on the new production line in the first quarter of 2025, aiming to speed up order fulfillment and strengthen its market position in Europe.

In recent years, Alstom has assigned production to its plants in Eastern Europe, where costs are lower. However, its plants in Bautzen and Görlitz performed additional work on trains produced in Poland. In the summer of 2023, Alstom announced plans to restructure its production capacity between Germany and Poland, intending to shift part of the production from German plants to those in Wrocław and Katowice, and potentially sell the Görlitz plant.

But a new major order worth €4 billion from German operators go.Rheinland and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr, which includes 90 Adessia Stream suburban trains and maintenance for 34 years, altered the company’s plans. The company decided to centralize train production in Bautzen, adding a line for Coradia Stream production for Romania.

Alstom Secures Orders for its German Plants

Under the contract with Romanian ARF, signed in 2022 for €490 million, Alstom committed to deliver 37 trains and provide technical maintenance for 15 years. The first three trains were manufactured in Poland, but the remaining units will be produced in Germany, reinforcing the role of the German plants in Alstom’s supply chain.

Alstom Optimizes Production Capacity in Europe

Alstom’s decision will not affect its Polish plants, as the Chorzów facility continues working on large contracts for other European clients. Meanwhile, the Görlitz plant lacks new orders and may close by 2026 following the completion of current contracts for trains for Deutsche Bahn and trams for Leipzig.
