If the results are successful, SBB will begin replacing the bogies on all 62 FV-Dosto units during scheduled maintenance. These double-deck trains were originally built by Bombardier, now part of Alstom.

Alstom upgrades FV-Dosto trains without WAKO technology

The original FV-Dosto trains featured WAKO suspension, which allowed faster speeds on curves by compensating for centrifugal forces. However, the system proved unreliable in service.

SBB discontinued the use of WAKO in 2022. Nevertheless, its components remain installed, increasing maintenance costs and reducing passenger comfort.

Now, Alstom and SBB are switching to simplified bogies without a tilt mechanism. This change is expected to improve stability, reduce life-cycle costs, and simplify train operation.

Retrofitting of FV-Dosto trains to begin in 2026

SBB plans to start the retrofitting process at the end of 2026 during routine overhauls. The entire upgrade program should be completed by early 2030 and will affect all 62 units.

According to SBB, the project’s cost amounts to several tens of millions of euros. While the exact figure is undisclosed, the investment is expected to pay off by lowering long-term maintenance expenses.

Alstom continues to play a key role in modernizing Switzerland’s rail infrastructure, ensuring reliable, stable, and comfortable service for passengers.
