Alstom Unveils New Airport Train for Barcelona-El Prat
25.10.2025
Alstom has launched a new express train serving the route between central Barcelona and El Prat Airport, which signifies a big move towards a green and efficient transport system for the Catalonia region.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Alstom Expands Sustainable Mobility in Catalonia
Alstom and FGC presented the first electric train for the express route that will connect the Barcelona city center to El Prat Airport.
This initiative tackles sustainability, innovation, and accessibility at once. Engineers at the facility in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda are currently qualifying the traction, brake, and communication subsystems before going into operation between late 2026 and early 2027.
The 22.7-kilometer route will feature nine stations, including Passeig de Gràcia, Sants, and both airport terminals. Trains will run every 15 minutes, cutting travel times to just over 20 minutes. Because the design prioritizes efficiency and comfort, passengers can expect reliable performance and reduced congestion on surrounding roads.
Alstom Builds Next-Generation Fleet and Maintenance Depot
Five-car Coradia Stream trains can transport a maximum of 656 passengers per unit with wide corridors for easy access and spacious luggage storage. Trains have LED lighting for doors and internal screens that display panoramic images for passengers. Passengers get current flight information too.
Accessibility has been a key concern too. All of the trains incorporate areas for reduced mobility passengers, multifunctional areas, and energy-saving solutions that meet decarbonization targets for Catalonia. Since the trains incorporate recyclable materials and eco-design concepts, reducing costs and environmental effects during the lifecycle of the trains has been ensured.
Alstom is also building a new maintenance depot with a size of 3,500 m² at a location near its plant at Santa Perpètua de Mogoda. This new depot will serve the fleet for a long period of time with workshops, storage space, and a rail link to Adif’s rail network. This project should be finished by spring of 2026 and operate for at least 15 years.
The partnership between Alstom and FGC reinforces Barcelona’s position as a European leader in sustainable rail transport. It demonstrates how technology and collaboration can deliver cleaner mobility solutions for growing urban regions.
