Alstom to Supply Components for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains in India

French company Alstom secured a contract with Integral Coach Factory (ICF) to supply components for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains. Indian manufacturing units will oversee both production and maintenance for all essential equipment. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Development of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains Project
Alstom will provide Mitrac traction converters and electrical systems for seventeen 24-car trains under the agreement. The contract is valued at ₹1.285 billion ($150 million), emphasizing its importance for India’s railway expansion.

All required components will be manufactured domestically, ensuring efficient logistics and streamlined maintenance services. This strategic move will accelerate railway modernization, enhancing long-distance travel convenience for millions of passengers.
Project head Sudhanshu Mani stated last June that introducing these trains was crucial for India’s transport sector. He highlighted that Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains would optimize overnight travel while improving passenger comfort nationwide.
In September, BEML revealed the first prototype, marking a key milestone for India’s rail network. This advancement reflects India’s commitment to innovation in railway technology and infrastructure development.
Future Prospects for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that serial production will commence within one and a half years. Factories across India will manufacture two to three trains per month, significantly strengthening the national railway system.
Marathwada Rail Coach Factory (MRCF), based in Latur, Maharashtra, will also contribute to rolling stock production. The facility is expected to build 1,920 sleeper coaches between 2026 and 2030 to meet growing demand.
This initiative highlights India’s focus on upgrading its rail services to improve passenger experience. The launch of new sleeper trains will increase travel efficiency while supporting the country’s transportation infrastructure goals.
