New Rolling Stock for Lyon metro line D

Alstom will supply 26 rubber-tyred MPL25 trains worth €145 million and overhaul automation systems for €158 million. This investment targets Lyon metro line D, the city’s busiest route with 300,000 daily passengers.

The fully automated, eco-designed trains can hold over 300 passengers. They offer modern amenities including wide aisles, large windows, refrigerated ventilation, and real-time passenger screens. Trains also support multiple-unit operation with existing MPL16 models.

Alstom prioritized sustainability by equipping the trains with electric braking systems that recover energy and reduce emissions. Accessibility has been enhanced through wide doors, open gangways, and spaces for reduced mobility passengers.

Complete System Upgrade for Lyon metro line D

To improve safety and control, Alstom will implement its Urbalis driverless signalling solution. This CBTC system enhances frequency and reliability, even on infrastructure without platform doors, and aligns with European cybersecurity standards.

The Urbalis system, already used on over 190 lines in 32 countries, is also deployed on Lyon’s metro line B. It reduces headways and energy consumption while accommodating rising ridership.

The project involves seven Alstom sites across France. Valenciennes handles train assembly, Le Creusot supplies bogies, and Villeurbanne oversees on-board electronics and cybersecurity. Other facilities contribute engines, traction, maintenance systems, and signalling technology.

Alstom, employing over 2,000 specialists in digital mobility, reinforces its leadership in sustainable transit. This comprehensive overhaul of Lyon metro line D underscores France’s commitment to innovation and green infrastructure.

The new MPL25 trains match the design of the MPL16 trains already in service, ensuring operational compatibility. Technical enhancements, such as cyberattack protection and energy-efficient systems, align with evolving urban transport needs.

This modernization project will transform public transit in Lyon, offering a faster, smarter, and more resilient mobility system that serves both current demand and future growth.
