Alstom Expands Production and Creates Jobs

French firm Alstom signed a contract with the national operator CP to provide suburban and intercity trains, assiting the modernization of the Portuguese railway network. The new trains are to replace obsolete ones, and most of all, on the Lisbon–Cascais line, where some of the trnas have run for more than 70 years.

It shall construct a new factory plant in Matosinhos, creating 300 direct and 1,500 indirect jobs. Through this, the country’s industrial base shall be boosted and domestic production of rolling stock shall be ensured.

According to the revised schedule, deliveries will start in 2029. The contract also includes an option for 36 additional trains to accelerate fleet renewal after the legal delays.

Alstom Strengthens Market Presence and Trust

Portugal’s Supreme Court overturned the suspension of the tender, which the competitors CAF and Stadler had enforced. They claimed the mandatory construction of the factory on the territory limited competition, but CP successfully argued the legitimacy of the selection of Alstom.

Infrastructure estimated the wastes loss brought by the delay to the nation to be €191 million but aims to make the losses through the EU programs or the state budget. Therefore, the endeavor now proceeds smoothly and reflects the steadiness of the Portuguese rail policy.
