Alstom has tested driverless trains in Germany, showcasing new capabilities of autonomous control in practice, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

In Salzgitter, a two-car Coradia LINT train, owned by Lower Saxony’s transport authority LNVG, traveled several kilometers in fully autonomous mode.

A key feature of the tests was the use of remote control, adding flexibility and safety to the system.

As part of the ARTE (Autonomous Regional Train Evolution) project, the trains were equipped with advanced systems: cameras, lidars, obstacle detection, and a state-of-the-art ETCS traffic management system integrated with Automatic Train Operation (ATO) technology.

This configuration allowed for the elimination of stationary devices, simplifying the implementation of the technology.

Drivers can connect to the controls at any time, making the system more reliable and adaptive.

The project is being implemented in partnership with Alstom, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Technical University of Berlin, supported by the German government.

Previously, Alstom has successfully tested these technologies on mainline and shunting trains and announced plans to deploy them widely by 2025.

Alstom continues to develop autonomous driving technologies, making them safer and more accessible for use on various types of rolling stock.
