Alstom to Operate Suburban Transport Services in Southern California Starting in 2025

Alstom will take over suburban transportation operations in Southern California starting in 2025. This step will improve services across the region and create hundreds of new job opportunities. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Alstom Strengthens Its Position in U.S. Transportation
Under a new $515 million contract, Alstom will oversee operations and maintenance for Metrolink. The agreement lasts for five years, with an option to extend for an additional three years. If extended, the total contract value will rise to $860 million.

The company plans to retain 180 existing jobs and create up to 200 new positions. Alstom will manage train crews, infrastructure upkeep, and locomotive maintenance, broadening its scope in the U.S. market. These responsibilities highlight the company’s growing influence in regional transport.
Alstom’s Expanded Role in Metrolink
Metrolink operates eight routes totaling 878 kilometers and spanning six California counties. These include Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and San Diego counties. The system uses 258 train cars and 60 locomotives, 57 of which feature operator cabins.
The Arrow line, a 14.5-kilometer route between San Bernardino and Redlands, will also benefit. It currently runs diesel-powered Stadler FLIRT trains, with North America’s first hydrogen-powered train joining in 2025. While Alstom will handle operations, another provider will maintain these trains.
