Alstom is conducting trials of the world’s first tram airbags in Zurich
22.04.2024
Alstom is developing innovative technology – tram airbags – that will become part of Zurich’s transportation system, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
These airbags are being developed for the Flexity trams, which have been supplied to the city for over 2.5 years at the request of the public transport operator VBZ.
The trials of the new airbags are progressing successfully, and VBZ has expressed satisfaction with the results.
According to project manager Marcel Kuntz, the airbag will activate shortly before a collision, reducing the consequences of accidents.
Sensors in the driver’s cabin will be responsible for activation signals.
Work is currently underway to improve the technology.
It is necessary to increase the speed of airbag deployment and develop a mechanism for quick folding so that the tram can resume operation immediately after an incident.
Alstom expects to patent this technology, which will undoubtedly be in demand not only in Zurich but also in other cities facing safety issues in public transport.
110 ordered trams are already being considered for equipping with this new safety system.

Considering the increasing number of tram-related accidents, the implementation of such technologies is an important step in enhancing the safety of passengers and road users.
