These modern low-floor trams were ordered in September 2021, when Västtrafik placed an order for 40 trams.

In 2022, the contract was amended to include an additional 20 trams. The total order is valued at 1.4 billion Swedish kronor, approximately 120 million euros.

The M34 model trams are designed to carry 319 passengers. Their design includes special areas for wheelchairs and strollers, making them more convenient and accessible for all passenger categories.

The new trams are scheduled to be put into operation in December 2024, following the completion of all necessary tests. All 60 trams are expected to be delivered to Gothenburg by 2026.

Previously, in November 2023, Västtrafik had already received the last of the 40 ordered M33 model trams from Alstom, which are also part of the Flexity family.

These 33-meter-long trams were produced in two versions: 30 units with a single driver’s cab and 10 with two. The production of the M33 and M34 series trams took place at the Alstom plant in Bautzen, Germany.

Gothenburg, located on the west coast of Sweden, is the country’s second-largest city by population, after Stockholm.

Its tram network, approximately 160 kilometers long, is considered one of the largest in Northern Europe.

The introduction of the new M33 and M34 series trams will replace the outdated M28 and M29 models, improve service quality, and meet the growing demand for public transport in the city.

These measures aim to improve Gothenburg’s transport infrastructure, an important step in developing urban mobility and enhancing the sustainability of transportation.

The new trams will not only provide comfortable and accessible transportation but will also play a crucial role in the sustainable development of the city’s transport network.
