Wages are only part of the package. The collective bargaining agreement also calls for improvements in benefits, time off, and job security. The union described the deal as a move toward clearer protections and enforceable workplace rules in a statement posted by the IAM Rail Division.

IAM members at Alstom: Plattsburgh joins Hornell

Workers at the Plattsburgh facility produce passenger rail equipment and components. With the ratification vote, they join IAM members at Alstom’s Hornell, New York, facility, where equipment including Amtrak’s NextGen Acela is built; Railway Supply has also covered related updates on Alstom’s Plattsburgh rail plant.

“This agreement replaces uncertainty with enforceable rules and real protections,” said Josh Hartford, IAM special assistant to the International President for the Rail Division. “More importantly, it establishes a solid foundation from which IAM Union members at Alstom can continue to build power, improve working conditions, and raise standards across the rail industry.”

The below statement is attributable to an Alstom spokesperson.

“Alstom supports each employee’s choice to join a union. We value our strong partnership with the Machinists union and are pleased to confirm that our employees in our Plattsburgh, NY facility have chosen to be represented by the Machinists and have ratified their first-ever three-year collective bargaining agreement. This milestone underscores the importance of rail manufacturing to the region’s economy and Alstom’s dedication to providing good jobs building, operating and maintaining passenger trains nationwide.”
