Alstom Strengthens Its Role in Sweden’s Rail Market
The firm remains committed to furthering its leadership in intelligent, long-term maintenance solutions that provide reliability and performance for the commuter network of Sweden.
The decade-long partnership with operator VR gets underway in December 2026, and both companies have already begun making preparations as they want a smoother service opening. Alstom will maintain the trains in Eskilstuna, Västerås, Tillberga, and Stockholm, with processes that routinely score maximum performance grades in EU tenders.
Alstom Leverages Innovation and Expertise in Maintenance
According to Mikael Granberg, Rolling Stock Maintenance Director at Alstom Sweden, the combination of workshops in Eskilstuna and Västerås enables robust and flexible maintenance for all train types. He said this collaboration delivers “strong maintenance capabilities that guarantee reliability and quality.”
Its Maintenance Performance Centre (MPC) will facilitate predictive maintenance as well as digital analytics to reduce downtime and increase fleet availability. With this methodology, Alstom will be able to optimize operations, decrease power consumption, as well as reduce wastage of materials—all being important elements of its sustainability approach.
VR’s Train Division Director, Haris Habul, further noted that both companies prioritize passengers. He stressed that technical competence as well as operating know-how will provide on-time and safe train services for the Mälardalen area.
Alstom Leads Swedish Rail Modernization
Alstom has delivered more than 1,000 trains to the Swedish market and holds several major service contracts. The company also leads the nationwide rollout of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), improving efficiency and safety both onboard and trackside.
Through the Mälartåg agreement, Alstom reinforces its status as a trusted partner for Sweden’s rail industry and a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions.
