Alstom Delivers New M34 Tram to Gothenburg: Updates on Urban Transport
03.09.2024
Alstom has delivered the first tram of a new modification to Gothenburg, marking the beginning of the city’s tram fleet renewal, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The new five-section vehicle, an extended version of the Flexity platform, is expected to undergo trials shortly.
In the Swedish classification, the tram is designated as the M34 series. The vehicle is 45 meters long, allowing it to accommodate up to 319 passengers.
The delivery of new trams is being carried out under options for 2021-2022 as part of a contract signed in 2016 between Västtrafik and Bombardier Transportation.
In 2021, Bombardier was acquired by Alstom, which is now responsible for fulfilling this large order. Under the initial firm agreement, Gothenburg has already received 40 three-section M33 series trams.
The new M34 model is a continuation of these trams, with increased capacity and length.
According to plans, the new trams will start operating on city routes from December of this year and will gradually be put into service until 2026.
They are intended to replace the outdated M29 series trams, which were produced by the Swedish company Hagglund between 1967 and 1972.
Thus, the city plans to renew a significant part of its tram fleet, which should enhance the comfort and reliability of transportation.
Today, the streets of Gothenburg also feature 65 low-floor M32 series trams manufactured by the Italian company AnsaldoBreda between 2004 and 2012.
In 2015, AnsaldoBreda became part of Hitachi Rail, as part of a global strategy to strengthen its position in the rail transport market.
Additionally, there are 79 partially low-floor M31 trams in operation, which are currently being modernized by Skoda Group.
This comprehensive modernization of the tram fleet helps improve the quality of urban transport and meets modern passenger transportation requirements.
The introduction of the new Alstom M34 trams is an important step in updating Gothenburg’s transport system.
City officials are confident that the new vehicles will not only improve transportation connections but also increase the attractiveness of public transport for local residents and visitors.
