Alstom DMU contract in Mexico: operating lines

The new fleet is planned for three corridors: Mexico City — Querétaro, Querétaro — Irapuato, and Saltillo — Nuevo Laredo. These sections are listed in ARTF tender documentation published in materials on gob.mx.

Production in Ciudad Sahagún and tender participants

Alongside Alstom, CAF and a joint venture between CRRC and Mexico Railway Transportation Equipment took part in the tender. Manufacturing will be centered at Alstom’s plant in Ciudad Sahagún, as noted by Railway Supply.

Train capacity and maintenance: two $40m depots

Suburban DMUs are designed for around 700 passengers, including about 315 seats. Intercity trains are specified to have 265 seats. Maintenance arrangements include building two maintenance depots priced at $40m each, and Alstom will maintain the trains for five years.

Alstom’s Ciudad Sahagún facility has previously delivered major orders in the country: it fulfilled a contract to supply 42 X’trapolis trains for the Tren Maya tourist railway project. That $1.84bn agreement was signed with the Mexican government in May 2021.
