06.06.2024
Zurich’s public transport operator VBZ continues to expand its fleet of modern trams by signing a new contract with Alstom for the delivery of 12 additional Flexity tram cars, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This order was made possible by an option included in the original 2017 contract signed with Bombardier, which has been part of Alstom since January 2021.

The original contract provided for the delivery of 70 Flexity trams with an option to order an additional 70 units.
In December 2020, VBZ exercised this option and placed an order for an additional 40 cars.
With the latest order of 12 trams, the total number of Flexity cars ordered for Zurich has reached 122 units.
Flexity trams are already actively operating on the streets of Zurich. More than 60 new generation cars have replaced the outdated Tram 2000 series.
One of the key features of the new trams is the Obstacle Detection Assistance System (ODAS), which significantly enhances traffic safety.
According to the terms of the 2017 contract, the delivery of the first 70 trams should be completed by the end of 2024.
The remaining cars ordered under the option will be received by VBZ by the spring of 2028. This will allow the city not only to renew and increase its tram fleet but also to improve the quality of transport services for the residents and guests of Zurich.
Flexity trams are distinguished not only by high safety standards but also by passenger comfort.
They are equipped with modern air conditioning systems, comfortable seating, and spacious interiors, making rides as pleasant and convenient as possible.
In addition, Flexity trams are economical and environmentally friendly. They are equipped with energy-efficient drive systems, which help reduce energy consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
This is particularly important for Zurich, which aims to improve the city’s environmental situation and reduce air pollution levels.
Thus, the order of additional Flexity trams is a significant step in the development of Zurich’s transport infrastructure.
It contributes to increasing passenger comfort and safety and helps the city move towards sustainable development and environmental sustainability.
VBZ and Alstom continue to successfully cooperate, making a significant contribution to improving the quality of urban life and transport services.
