Algiers Ferry Terminal Renovation moves into construction phase
13.12.2025
Algiers Ferry Terminal Renovation is now underway, with the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) starting construction on a major upgrade to one of the region’s key multimodal transit hubs, as reported by Metro Magazine.
Built in the late 1970s, the Algiers Ferry Terminal has stayed in service even as ferry vessels and operating needs have shifted. With dedicated federal funding in place, New Orleans RTA is pressing ahead with a full modernization focused on accessibility, rider amenities, and terminal operations.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

“The Algiers project is another step in RTA’s investment in modern transit infrastructure and regional connectivity,” said Lona Edwards Hankins, CEO of the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority.
Project scope and funding for Algiers Ferry Terminal Renovation
The renovation of the Algiers Ferry Terminal and its maintenance building represents an $11.4 million investment. Funding support includes Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding, Federal Highway Administration ferry funds flexed to FTA, and a local match provided by RTA, as outlined by Mass Transit.
The modernization includes a redesigned accessible boarding ramp and upgrades to the pedestrian bridge. Inside the terminal, the plan calls for a full interior renovation and a new second-floor office level. The first floor is also being reconfigured to support future community and passenger uses.

Accessibility and rider amenities upgrades
Beyond the building interior, New Orleans RTA is adding new rider shelters, along with improved lighting and landscaping. The scope also includes stormwater enhancements. At the same time, site circulation will be revised to better support walking, biking, accessibility, and overall transit access.
Contractors, design team, and timeline
The construction contract was awarded to CDW Services. Batture Engineering LLC served as the engineering firm for design, and Studio West served as the architectural firm—details also covered by Marine Log. “This renovation will bring needed upgrades to a terminal that has served Algiers for decades,” said RTA Board Chair Fred Neal Jr. “It will enhance mobility and the rider experience while strengthening regional connections.”
Construction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
