Indian Railways is lining up the semi-high-speed service after key upgrades on the corridor, aiming to make journeys for business and leisure travelers both more comfortable and less time-consuming.

Ahmedabad–Udaipur Vande Bharat Express launch timeline

The planned service follows the successful electrification of the Udaipur–Himmatnagar–Ahmedabad route, which has moved preparations into a quicker phase, as reported by Travel and Tour World. With electrification complete, the train could begin operating as early as late January or February, giving passengers a faster option than existing services on the same corridor.

Interest in Vande Bharat Express Ahmedabad Udaipur plans has grown in part because the line links two prominent cities with strong economic and cultural importance. The goal, as outlined, is straightforward: cut end-to-end journey time while keeping the experience modern and hassle-free, consistent with how the service is positioned within India’s evolving rail network.

Route, stations, and speed-focused service

Under the initial operating plan, the train is expected to run between Ahmedabad’s Asarwa Junction and Udaipur City Station. The route is described as about 270 kilometers, creating a direct connection that is expected to strengthen cross-state rail links.

As a semi-high-speed train, the service is built around combining speed with comfort-oriented features. It is expected to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, in line with how the Vande Bharat Express platform is described by India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB). The emphasis, however, is not just on speed; it also focuses on a more efficient trip for passengers who value reliability and convenience.

For travelers who currently use trains that take longer or offer fewer modern facilities, the new service is presented as a clear step up. In practical terms, that means a quicker option for regular commuters, while also appealing to people traveling for tourism or occasional trips.

Possible expansion to Chittorgarh and longer-distance links

Beyond the initial plan, there is discussion of extending the service to Chittorgarh Junction in the future. This potential extension depends on the completion of pit line construction at Chittorgarh. If the facility work is finished and the plan moves ahead, passengers could gain a more continuous fast connection deeper into Rajasthan.

Alongside the Vande Bharat proposal, additional service ideas have been raised for the region. Chittorgarh MP and former BJP State president CP Joshi has voiced support for a new daily train service linking Udaipur with Mumbai and Chennai, according to a local report from UdaipurTimes. He has argued that the Udaipur–Ahmedabad railway section is fully electrified and can handle long-distance trains, making such connections technically feasible and operationally viable.

Backers of a Udaipur–Mumbai–Chennai daily service describe it as a response to growing demand for improved transport choices. Udaipur’s history, cultural landmarks, and scenic appeal are part of why it attracts visitors from across India and abroad, and stronger rail links to major metropolitan cities could help increase visitor numbers, boost tourism activity, and support the regional economy.

The same proposal is also framed as useful for business travelers, students, and other commuters who currently rely on road travel or flights between these cities. Flights are available, but they can be expensive and less convenient for frequent travel; in that context, the train option is described as a more affordable and practical alternative.

With the expected start window approaching, anticipation for the new service continues to build. If the Ahmedabad–Udaipur Vande Bharat Express launches on schedule—and if future extensions and additional long-distance services materialize—Indian Railways would further expand faster, more modern rail options for passengers traveling across Gujarat, Rajasthan, and beyond.
