Adif to Invest €1.33 Billion in Renewable Rail Energy
28.06.2025
Adif will open a €1.33 billion tender for green electricity supply from 2026 to 2030, providing Spanish rail operators with fully renewable power and improved energy pricing options. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Adif to Overhaul Energy Procurement Strategy for Rail
The tender keeps the previous energy contract structure but adds new tools for rail operators to manage cost and risk. Adif will exclude grid access fees, handling them directly with utilities.

All suppliers must submit indexed pass-through price offers. Operators can hedge electricity costs partially or fully, and for flexible timeframes—monthly, quarterly, or annually—depending on their needs.
Adif will choose three leading bidders based on competitiveness. It will then negotiate terms to lock in favorable pricing for operators under market-driven contracts.
Adif Introduces Flexible Hedging and Regional Energy Lots
The pricing model links final costs to actual usage, OMIE market rates, balancing services, and optional hedges via OMIP. Adif groups electricity delivery points into 16 geographic lots to reduce price volatility.
A new hedge mechanism adapts to OMIP’s liquidity periods. This lets rail companies time their hedge strategies for maximum advantage while Adif finalizes supplier agreements on their behalf.
In 2024, traction energy use on Adif and Adif AV lines reached 2.76 TWh. It is projected to rise slightly to 2.79 TWh in 2025 due to increased rail activity.
The full energy volume will be renewable and certified by Guarantees of Origin, supporting Adif’s 2018–2030 Climate Change Action Plan and Spain’s carbon-neutral transport objectives.
By shifting to a more transparent and dynamic procurement approach, Adif empowers operators to manage energy expenses more efficiently while ensuring that Spain’s rail system runs on 100% clean power.
