Adif boosts national network with historic rail investments

Adif Alta Velocidad (AV) led the effort with €2.46 billion directed toward high-speed lines. Key allocations included €501.8 million for Murcia–Almería and €219.6 million for the Madrid–Extremadura corridor.

The Basque Y project received €211.9 million, while €133.4 million was spent on the Madrid–Lleida–Barcelona line. Additionally, €222.6 million funded critical upgrades to the Madrid–Seville route.

Meanwhile, Adif invested €2.03 billion to improve conventional and suburban services. The Cercanías network absorbed €710.6 million, freight lines gained €243.3 million, and €219.1 million targeted the Northwest Corridor.

Adif achieves financial gains and strengthens ESG leadership

Revenue at Adif AV rose by 7.62%, reaching €782.95 million due to increased rail traffic and passenger demand. Track access fees generated €644.89 million, while stations and services added €137.64 million.

Operating profit more than doubled to €287.1 million, supported by asset sales from the Chamartín redevelopment. EBITDA grew slightly to €433.9 million, and net losses dropped by 26% to €100.9 million.

Sustainability remained central to Adif AV’s strategy. The operator issued its eighth green bond, bringing total green funding to €4.6 billion since 2017. Sustainalytics ranked the firm second worldwide among transport infrastructure companies for ESG risk.

In 2024, 87.7% of electricity used by Adif AV came from renewable sources. The company reduced CO₂ emissions by 15,652 tonnes and applied certified green energy at all facilities.

Additional initiatives included noise mitigation, responsible procurement covering 100% of purchases, and actions aligned with Spain’s Circular Economy Strategy 2030.

By aligning record investments with climate goals, Adif reinforces its role as a sustainable mobility leader and a driver of national infrastructure modernization.
